For years I have driven this road and told everyone it is the best rest stop. This last trip I took the time to hike to the top of Independence Rock. It was wonderful. Searching for old signatures from the 1800's, the views and it was peaceful. An easy hike up the East side. From now on, I will stop and hike up the rock and explore different areas when I drive past. I enjoyed this free historical stop much better than the expensive drive into Little Bighorn National Memorial earlier in the day.
What an amazing place. I wish I'd known you could actually climb the rock itself - I wouldn't have worn flip-flops. Our family's running joke was 'thank God we didn't get dysentery and die!' #OregonTrail
This was super fun. Kids climbed the rock. Me half way. So neat to see the names and dates of the pioneers.
So inspiring. The names and dates on top are really interesting to see and think about the people who were there over a hundred years ago.
My 6 year old climbed up this rock and was so excited. It was scary to see him so fearless. It was a lot of fun to get to the top. It has historic importance. It was the spot pioneers had to get to prior to 4th of July to ensure safe travels West without getting stuck in snow. Names of people are carved om the rock from the 1800s.
